AMERICAN ASSOCIATION of FORENSIC DENTISTS
In October 1978, a group of dentists met at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology for FD training. Many of the instructors and the two organizations they recommended, appeared to some group members as "elitist." The attitude was, 'we know more than you and thus are superior to you. The group decided to form a new forensic group, the AAFD, with the intention of bringing FD knowledge to not only general dentists and staff, but anthropologists, attorneys, law enforcement personnel, etc. The next year we met with a represntative of another FD group who tried to dissuade us fromopening up. the science to the "riff-raf." We invited him to join us or be left behind. |

Today, the AAFD is the world's brgest FD organization (3000+ members), is recognized by the Federal Government, ADA and numerous scientific organizations. We have expanded AAFD interests not only scientifically but politically (areas of terrorism in the Middle East, government abuses in Honduras, Mexico, Kenya). We have testified to Congress and numerous govermental agencies on matters of over-reaction to infection control measures, latex sensitivity, AIDS/HIV, etc. Our members have introduced legislation in many states promoting FD and FD identifications of unidentified bodies prior to disposal. The recent retreat that OSHA made in its attacks against dentists was, in part, due to the legal efforts of the AAFD and Congressman Porter, OSHA oversight committee chairman. The AAFD is not a money making organization. It is not a social or elitist group. Our purpose is to expand the knowledge and interest in FD. If you would like to actively help, contribute short articles, news, ideas, techniques, etc. please let us know. There is so much yet to do. The American Association of Forensic Denőists is an international group of 3000 dentists, anthropologists and related law enforcement professionals. Membership is free. The Journal is published quarterly and is available in exchange for 6 large, self addressed, stamped (2 oz) envelopes. Membership certificates are $25. Back issues from 1978 to present cost $8 per year. The JAAFD is published by Andent, Inc. |
